On Saturday 5th July 2014, the worlds largest annual sporting event will roll past our doors, here in West Tanfield.

With one HUGE party, lots of reasonably priced parking, two open roads for alternative access from A1 and the Dales and marking the start of the LIVE worldwide tv coverage:

West Tanfield is THE best, family-friendly place to come celebrate and experience the spectacle!

Opening Hours

We will be opening at 11am especially for all of you coming to cheer on the Tour at West Tanfield. Our beer tents are located just of the roundabout & in the field before the bridge with the fun fair & hot air balloons. Watch out for our signs.

The Penning Brewing Co beer tent at West Tanfield will be opening:

  • Friday 4th July 11am to 11pm
  • Saturday 5th July (race day!) 11am to 11pm
  • Sunday 6th July 11am to 10pm

There will be a Hot Air Balloon Festival as part of West Tanfield’s Grand Depart celebrations featuring 20 Hot Air Balloons from the very best teams….and including this beauty from Disney, from the film “Up”!

Friday 4th July, evening @ 6pm
Hot Air Balloon Pilot briefing and if suitable, free-flight from the venue, weather conditions permitting.
Friday evening post flight or Saturday morning – flight cylinder refuelling.

Saturday 5th July
Race Time, weather conditions permitting.
Balloons prepare for tether, inflation to coincide with 15-20 minute to arrival time of the peloton. Balloons tethered until West Tanfield race section completed. Unfavourable weather conditions – possible baskets rigged and burners lit.

Saturday afternoon post race – flight cylinder refuelling.
Saturday evening, after dark, weather conditions permitting
Night glow of balloons, or baskets/burners, possibly to music.
Saturday evening post night glow – flight cylinder refuelling.

Sunday 6th July, morning @ 6am
Pilot briefing, free-flight from the venue, favourable weather conditions permitting.
Sunday morning post flight – flight cylinder refuelling.
Sunday evening @ 6pm – pilot briefing (for those able to remain on site) and if suitable, free-flight from venue, favourable weather conditions permitting.

NB Free-Flight means not tethered!!!!

Find us and Park…

There will be lots of parking and camping available (all prices are controlled by ASO who run The Tour, so no profiteering!). Parking will be £10 per car.

The race route will be closed from 9.00am to 6 pm ( time approximate ) but will be open to pedestrians and some cycles until around lunch time at which point the road ( but not the pavements ) will be closed to all traffic.

Car parks will be opening at 5am please check for a lot of roads are closed in surrounding areas at 7am on the 5th july 2014 for the Grand Depart – Tour de France.
